Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) designation for the BA and BS in Economics
Effective with new and transfer undergraduate students accepted to George Mason University starting Fall 2024, the Mason Department of Economics now offers BA and BS Economics degrees as a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) discipline with the Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP) Code 45.0603 designation, “Econometrics and Quantitative Economics.”
The change in the CIP code is effective for undergraduate students entering Mason for the Fall 2024 catalog year.
What exactly is changing? Before Fall 2024, the BA and BS Economics CIP code was Code 45.0601. The updated CIP code is 45.0603.
Why was the change requested? The requested CIP code change to 45.0603, Econometrics & Quantitative Economics (a STEM designation) evolved from Mason’s long-standing focus on a degree program that emphasizes technical, analytical, and quantitative methods and arguments. As our curriculum has evolved over the years, a change in the STEM designation of our undergraduate programs was deemed necessary to accurately reflect the rigorous mathematical, econometric, statistical analytical, and economic theoretical foundations of our BA and BS Economics degrees.
How will this change affect students?
For students with a catalog year before 2024-2025, there will be no change to degree requirements.
International students should consult with Mason’s Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS) to consult with an OIPS Advisor on their eligibility for Optional Professional Training (OPT) with a STEM major, and inquire about any necessary updates to their I-20 form with the CIP Code 45.0603.
Does this change the name of my major or degree? No. Students will still graduate with either a Bachelor of Arts with a major in Economics or a Bachelor of Science with a major in Economics.
Will the CIP code or STEM designation appear on my transcript? No. George Mason University does not include CIP codes or STEM designations on transcripts.
