Abstract

A standard assumption in many political economy models is that political preferences are determined by economic self-interest. We survey a large sample of Swedish lottery winners to test whether lottery wins induce long-term changes in political attitudes consistent with self-interest. We find lottery winners become more negative toward taxes on wealth and inheritances, but find no evidence of wider attitudinal changes regarding redistributive policies or other political issues.
