George Mason doctoral Economics alumna, Professor Erte Xiao of Monash University, has been named as a 2024 Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia (ASSA). An elected body of leading researchers and professionals in the social sciences, ASSA honored Dr. Xiao as an economics expert and social science leader in her field.
An excerpt of Dr. Xiao's Academy Fellow profile highlights her groundbreaking interdisciplinary research:
[Dr. Xiao] conducts interdisciplinary research to explore the behavioral impacts of extrinsic incentives and the influence of social preferences and norms on decision-making. Her work challenges the standard economic theory of monetary incentives, which focuses on how incentives alter payoffs to influence behavior. Instead, she provides unique insights into how incentives convey social norms and emotions, and how informal institutions like social norms regulate behavior. Through her interdisciplinary approach, her research has impacted not only business and economics but also psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and law.
The Monash Business School also proudly announced Dr. Xiao's honor noting it is "one of the highest national distinctions in the field."
