Economic sociology is an approach to analyzing economic phenomena that focuses on the social causes and consequences of economic actions and outcomes.  It is a vibrant field of study that exists at the intersection of economics and sociology.  These classes will explore the writings of the key thinkers in the development of the field (e.g. Weber, Polanyi, Marx) alongside more contemporary advances in field (e.g. by Coleman, Granovetter, Swedberg, Zelizer).

Economic Sociology II is a seminar that will explore key writings within the "new economic sociology" and survey recent developments within the field. Special emphasis will be placed on how culture, norms, networks, ideologies and values shape economic action and interaction. The first half of the course will focus on the core writings in the economics and sociology of the market. The second half of the course will introduce students to interesting writings in important areas in the current economic sociology literature.
