Section Information for Spring 2017
This course will examine the events and processes that have shaped the modern Middle East. In the first half of the course, students will explore the varying histories of nation-states that comprise this region, while in the second half, the focus will be on challenges confronting the region as a whole, such as the impact of economic modernization, the consequences of war and civil war, the issue of gender, and ideological change and the Arab Spring. These topics will be investigated based on readings, documentaries, literature and films by and about the Middle East.
