The College of Humanities and Social Sciences will host its second annual Beer Tasting on Saturday, Oct. 6 at George Mason University’s Fairfax campus. The event, part of Mason’s annual Alumni Weekend, is designed to give alumni a chance to reconnect with the college and meet dean Jack Censer and their fellow former classmates.
This year, the college isn’t the only entity forging connections at this event.
Jason Camsky, BS ’08, economics, will lead the Beer Tasting in his role as a regional sales manager for the Port City Brewing Company, the Alexandria-based brewery that is supplying the evening’s drink selections.
A campus resident for four and a half years, Camsky looked back on his life as a Mason student with satisfaction. He majored in economics, minored in philosophy, played four years of Ultimate Frisbee and met a multitude of friends.
“Living on campus, I met so many friends and people with diverse drives, experiences, interests and backgrounds,” he said. “That’s irreplaceable. I really enjoyed my studies, and I wouldn’t trade my four years on the Ultimate Frisbee team for anything in the world.”
Camsky also looked back fondly on his programs of study, both of which come in handy during everyday life, he said. While economics is not solely a statistics-based field, he has been able to apply the discipline as he prepares sales pitches and presentations. He also vividly recalls the challenging debates and engaging dialogue of his philosophy courses.
“Sales pitches are part charisma and part hard numbers, because numbers don’t lie,” Camsky said. “My economics background allows me to come up with novel statistics for my presentations, and my philosophy background forces me to think on my feet.”
It has been about a year since Camsky last visited campus, he estimated, but before that, he frequently stopped by to use Mason’s gym facilities and play Ultimate Frisbee with the current team.
“I can’t wait to walk around and see how the campus has changed and encounter people I otherwise wouldn’t see,” he said. “It will be nice to briefly revisit an experience that was so integral to my life.”
Alumni are encouraged to come meet Camsky, Dean Censer, and a variety of faculty, staff, and former students at the Beer Tasting on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 4-6 p.m. in the Johnson Center’s Dewberry Hall.
